Crossing the Tiber
Accompanying Those Along Their Spiritual Journey
‘Crossing the Tiber’ is sometimes a metaphor used to describe an individual's journey to Baptism in the Catholic Church and an already baptized Christian's journey to full communion in the Catholic Church.
As someone who accompanies those on that spiritual journey, I soon learned that the timing and place of crossing is very unique and personal. The various bridges over the Tiber, leading to Vatican City enriches the metaphor of this process of conversion and spiritual growth. My role is to accompany, walking with them where they are. As each bridge approaches, our call is to invite those seeking a new path, to choose when, where, or even if this is their time and place to cross. For me, it's reminder of the importance of respect, humility, compassion and companionship, as I accompany these beautiful souls.
As I was thinking about what music would go well with my story of bridges, Bridge Over Troubled Waters came to mind. For some the journey is pure joy, with little in the way of rough waters. For many, however, it's journey of overcoming deep woundedness and sorrow. This song reflects the beauty in rising above our troubled waters of life.
